Look for Singing Teachers Online
You don't need voice lessons to sing, but it helps. I've been a singer in a rock and roll band for about five years and, until recently, had never had a voice lesson. But one day, I began to worry about damage that I might be doing to my voice. You see, I regularly go hoarse by the end of performances. I began looking for singing teachers.
You can look for singing teachers online, but be careful not to fall into one of the scams that abound all over the internet. You cannot learn vocal lessons from a book. You need actual singing teachers to show you proper breathing technique, and correct you when you make mistake. Yes, you can learn some of the techniques used by singing schools out of books or online texts, but to really get them right, you will need a singing teacher to give you hands on guidance.
I have had many singing teachers since I made my decision to start learning proper singing technique. Let me tell you: all singing teachers are not equally good. My first teacher was horrible. She was a thoroughly accurate and proficient teacher with a gorgeous voice. It just happened that she had no idea how to sing. Singing teachers must be singers but they must also be teachers. After just a few lessons with her, it was clear that it was going nowhere, and I quit to find another teacher.
My next singing teacher was better, but he was kind of too hands off for me. His philosophy stemmed from his own experience with overcritical singing teachers. He believed that the student should be free to learn at their own pace without excessive correction. Although I respected this, it just didn't quite jive with my learning style. I love lots of feedback and correction – it is the only way for me to learn if I am doing things right or wrong. Although I learned more from him than from many of my other singing teachers, I still had to part ways.
My best singing teacher was simply a friend of mine in training to be an opera singer. He has always enjoyed explaining things and, before he had even mastered the art of singing, he was already doing a great job of passing on his wisdom to me. Although I have studied with more knowledgeable singing teachers, I still have not had one who has taught me more.
